Bike Bicycle
Can you put a bicycle speedometer on a dirt bike?

I have a cheat bicycle speedometer (Bell F20 Bike Computer, to be exact) and was wondering if it was possible to mount it on my dirt bike (Yamaha TTR-125, to be exact). I don’t see a problem except for the fact that the instructions say that the magnets must be within 2mm of each other. I don’t know how hard this would be to do considering my bikes aren’t exactly accessible right now. Thanks.

Yes, lots of people have used bicycle speedos on motorcycles. I belong to a mailing list for vintage BMW bikes, and some of the first watercooled bikes BMW made in the 80s have speedos that die early, and they cost hundreds to replace, so lots of people put on a bike speedo.

For a street bike you have to make sure that the bike speedo goes up into the 80s. Apparently many of them don’t. It’s not as big a problem on a dirt bike because you don’t go that fast.

Then as you say it’s just a matter of mounting a magnet on the rim and getting the sensor close enough to read it as it goes by. There are web pages about this. Basically, it’s done with epoxy and spacers. Use your imagination!
